I've downloaded CUPS-PDF from 'https://bitbucket.org/codepoet/cups-pdf-for-mac-os-x/wiki/Home' and installed it following the instructions included therein.
The only instruction I could not follow is to pick 'Generic postscript color printer'; I could pick 'Generic postscript printer' though.
CUPS-PDF shows in the printer list.
CUPS-PDF apparently prints as indicated by the progress bar.
But, the print doesn't show anywhere on my computer:
The output is not in /Users/Shared/CUPS-PDF in a folder with my user account's name.
I did make an alias to this folder on my desktop but it only contains two folders: 'my user name' and 'SPOOL'
The first folder had a 'clone' of the download source page (which I deleted.)
SPOOL has nothing in it.
I've never had a problem using CUPS-PDF while on OS X 10.4.11, something I'll never be able to revert to.
I'll be eternally grateful to you if you could help me with this issue but, on condition that you use a language as plain as English since my expertise with OS X, which was never as considerable as to be able to use terminal to any advantage, nor understanding terms such as sudos and the like, is now even diminished on account of the new OS I am forced to use from now on.
Thank you all so much for your help.

- I am running OS X 10.6.2. I connect remotely using windows remote desktop / terminal services to various windows machines. For the XP and Windows 2003 Server 32 bit systems I have no problems with printing pdf documents from the remote windows system back to my mac using CUPS PDF. I don't have to install anything on the remote windows computer. However, for Windows 2003 Server 64 bit and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, the CUPS PDF printer does not appear in the printer list. I tried installing the Laserwriter 8500 print driver (which apparently CUPS uses) and attaching to a unused TS printing port. The printer appears in the list but it won't print, and it's obviously not attaching to my computer.
I can't upgrade my mac operating system until I resolve a keyboard driver issue with 10.6.3 and above. Any suggestions?I am having a similar issue. I'm using Remote Desktop to connect to a 2008 R2 server and am trying to use PDFWriter as a redirected printer to create a PDF. It is only working after I check print to file, save the file (which it creates an XPS file that is not compatible), then I uncheck print to file, click print, and then it creates the pdf file I need.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Basically - I need to have a 'PDF' printer because the print window is on the remote server and it doesn't have the save as pdf option.
Thanks.
Phillip - I am seeking a solution to digitally mass-sign PDF Documents. I'd prefer a way to add this into a CUPS-PDF Printer so I can use a shared queue on the server. Anything without a GUI is welcome. Adobe Acrobat is way to expensive for this and can not be automated at all.
Any suggestion is welcome. I sadly couldn't find an appropriate solution here or via Google.
Best Regards
MacLemonI am quite Apache savvy, having my own tipi. So the config is not the problem. I just don't know where to start with a CUPS filter to add this.
I have started a thread at the CUPS.org Fora and hope to find some info there.
MacLemon - This was working before, but I don't know what changed, nor where to look to find anything.
What's happening is that anything printing through KDE's print system (ie Konqueror, Kate, KMail) produces defunct .pdf files when I print to my cups-pdf printer. There are no errors in /var/log/cups/cups-pdf.log. The only thing I do notice is that upon inspection of the resulting pdf in a text editor is that it appears only the header is written, there doesn't seem to be any data written after that.
This all does work from Firefox, and I can print a test page from within the cups setup (http://127.0.0.1:631), so I know that it does work.
Anyone have a clue what KDE setting might be goofed up?I'd kinda forgotten about this. It worked for me after I deleted by .kde folder. (I was doing that for other reasons) But only for a while, it's now not working again, so I hope what you figured out also works for me!
http://personalpages.tds.net/cupsd.conf
http://personalpages.tds.net/cups-pdf.conf - I am having all manner of problems with PDF printing. Recently added a Lexmark MX710 and have 7 machines that were previously printing fine to an X652de a T652 as well as a Samsung CLP770. All network printers.
Now there are bizarre issues with PDF printing. CUPS version 1.6.1. The MX710 will blue screen and reboot when printing one specific pdf without fail. There are all kinds of random nonsensical results when printing from different locations. A pdf that stalls the X and T652 with 'filter error' will print from my own machine to the same printer, using the same versions of cups, .ppd file, and everything package related to cups.
Yet other PDF files will print, while some print complete gibberish, I can't find any rhyme or reason or anything predictable about any of it other than to say printing postscript files works fine all around.
This has been universally in KDE printing through Okular.
I've tried some things I've found suggested, such as modifying the mime.conv as suggested by an old ubuntu thread, adding the a2ps package, all to zero effect.
Last edited by TheWretched (2012-12-08 00:27:41)At this point the only reasonable explanation I can think of is that the ppd package I downloaded and installed via included shell script from lexmark for the mx710 caused this whole catastrophe. The only common thread for this problem starting was that I used this on all of the affected machines and they now all manifest problems. And on four of these machines this is literally all that was done, they were loaded in september, have not been updated via pacman in any way, and are running the exact same version of cups poppler, and okular that they were then, which was working, and now cannot print pdf to any printer at all without causing one of several problems depending on the printer.
I cannot seem to get this reversed though. I've gone so far as to force remove all the cups packages, and delete the files associated with the install script, but the problem remains afterward. From what I can see so far all this lexmark package did was display a license agreement, then copy the ppd files in it's folder to /usr/share/ppd/Lexmark. This particular printer, the mx710 has no .ppd available that I have found other than this one from Lexmark directly. Open printing doesn't have anything for this model.
This printer's driver has some kind of a cups filter driver with it that the install script presumably installs, I suspect this could be what caused the problem specifically, but I must not be removing it correctly, despite following the file removal suggestions in the Lexmark readme for uninstallation. CUPS printing is something I am new to and only have a basic understanding of.
To answer some specific questions I nearly forgot, I don't have cups pdf installed. I have chrome installed which can successfully save pages to PDF, previously it could also print pdf, and presumably it prints everything as pdf given the cups pdf workflow. That is also broken now too, so printing from the browser causes the printer to fail as well. If I save as pdf from chrome, and print with adobe reader, it works.

I am having trouble making a working installation of CUPS-PDF to be shared through SAMBA. Windows XP can't find the shared printers, the archbox can find it's own printer shares but can not use cups-pdf through SAMBA because of 'Idle - Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)'.

Any suggestions?Hi Everyone!
This pdf printer has been GREAT!
But I did have to make one little tweak before it was good for me.
The default PDF version of 1.4 produced an output file in which text would collide and overlap. Patching the build for PDF version 1.2 fixed it for me.
Here's the amended PKGBUILD:
pkgname=cups-pdf
pkgver=1.7.0
pkgrel=3
pkgdesc='CUPS PDF Backend'
depends=('cups')
url='http://cip.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vrbehr/cups-pdf/'
source=(http://cip.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vrbehr/cups-pdf/cups-pdf_$pkgver.tar.gz)
md5sums=('875ed70ec1acdab9d935bca45ee521f8')
build() {
cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
cat src/cups-pdf.h | sed 's|CPPDFVER '1.4'|CPPDFVER '1.2'|' > tmpFile
mv tmpFile src/cups-pdf.h
gcc -O9 -s -o cups-pdf -Isrc src/cups-pdf.c
install -D -m 755 cups-pdf $startdir/pkg/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf
install -D -m 644 extra/PostscriptColor.ppd.gz $startdir/pkg/usr/share/cups/model/Postscript.Color.ppd.gz
p.s. I know posting PKGBUILD source to the forum is somewhat of a no no
(sorry sarah31, and thank you for everything!)
It just seemed like a good idea to correct this for the archive searchers.
android - Hi All,
I am trying to implement my own custom report layout for the following simple Report query
select e.DEPTNO, d.DNAME, d.LOC, e.ENAME, e.JOB
from emp e, dept d
where e.deptno = d.deptno
The steps are the following
1. Create Report Query
2. Download XML file
3. Use Stylus Studio to create XSL-FO (XSLT 2.0) based on XML data downloaded in
previous step.
4. Go back to Report query and upload XSL-FO file to APEX (layout name 'MyLayout' is also specified).
Finish Report Query creation
5. Enter Report Query again, select report layout 'MyLayout' and select Test Report
The result is a failure with some java cocoon exception:
org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Unknown request object encountered named template : null
Cocoon stacktrace[hide]
Exception in StreamGenerator.generate() context://fop_post/sitemap.xmap - 17:32 <map:serialize type='xml'>

It seems to me that XSL-FO that I created for this layout is rejected somehow by APEX and not passed to Coccon at all.
Guys, what am I doing wrong ? I will appreciate any help.
Regards,
VadimHi Mike,
My standard printing is working nicely. That's the custom reporting that I experience problems with.
After 8 hours of googling and 4 cups of coffee I figured out where the problem was. When you define XSL-FO file you need to 'escape' every occurence of % sign. For example you cannot define width= '100%' because APEX will pass this unchanged to Tomcat and Tomcat in turn will reject this but still passing NULL template pointer to Cocoon. Taking into consideration very poor logging capabilities one can spend hours trying to fugure out what is hapenning. APEX should be smart enough to escape characters or at least there should be a doco somewhere listing the rules you need to follow whem creating FO stylesheets.
I must admit that the whole APEX PDF printing using Tomcat/Cocoon (and probably Fop because that's what used by Cocoon behind the scene anyway) is unfortunately a hack. Reporting does not have to be that complex.
I would be extremely grateful if somebody can tell me what sort of XML tool is best suited to generate XSL-FO files that can be easily understood by APEX/Tomcat/Cocoon.
Regards,
Vadim - For years I have succesfully used the 'Adobe PDF' printer as a way to print PDF files from photoshop files. i create a lot of architectural images consisting of layers of raster images and text that are typically 24 x36 @ 300 dpi. I have used this process, rather than saving as a PDF, because printing resulted in the smallest file size. I have used this method for years with CS3 and for the past few months with CS6. Just recently I started getting the following error through a .log file:
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfileaccess; OffendingCommand: imageDistiller; ErrorInfo: DictCRC --nostringval-- ]%%
Stack:
( ''''!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !'##' !' '! !! ###########$$$'!! !!!!!!! ...)
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Do other users use the Adobe PDF printer as a method for creating PDF files and has anyone else experienced this issue? I have figured out a work-around, but I would prefer that the software continue to perform as it has in the past.
Thanks!A quick Google search gives me some interesting results, f.e.:

-> this insinuates that it might be an upstream-bug.
I think I read somewhere that cups has changed from PDF to PS as the 'backend', and that means that a PDF that used to be fed directly to the printer, now has to be converted to PS. This same change has given me lots of headaches to print from libreoffice... - I think the title of the post says it all. System is up to date, cups-pdf setup is as in the wiki.
To illustrate what I mean, here is a sample image (try to view it full-size).
Left side created with cups-pdf, right side with the built-in 'save as pdf' function of chromium.
I do not know if that is important, but the document created by chromium uses DajaVuSans fonts, but the one created by cups-pdf uses 'Unknown - Type3 - embedded' fonts.
By the way, I have not used cups-pdf for a while, but I remember having created quality documents with it.
What is the problem there?

For the time being, if I want to print in landscape, I'll print it out in pdf and lpr on the command line! - Hello,
I'm not able to 'print' PFD's in Photoshop CS4 on my mac. I think there's no virtual PDF-printer installed. I can't find a way to add it.
* Can I add a virtual printer on my mac, that's compatable with photoshop?
* Is there some software to print it with?
* Is there an other way to make PFD (not just by save as PDF) in Photoshop?
Thanks a lot!
FransiscusFransiscus, jere are the two links I read in order to create a virtual PDF printer under OS X 10.6.1 on my MacBook Pro:
CUPS_PDF Package for Mac OS X
http://www.codepoetry.net/projects/cups-pdf-for-mosx
A Virtual Printer for OS X
http://www.windley.com/archives/2009/09/avirtual_printer_for_osx.shtml
There's some extended background discussion here:
CUPS-PDF - A free virtual PDF printer

...ben - For those trying to get the PDF Printer device from Adobe Acrobat or CS2 to work in 10.5.x, here's a short guide to getting it going despite Adobe's claims that it can't be fixed.
First, make sure that you've got the latest version of Acrobat 7 install (7.1.0 at the time of this writing). Then, from within Acrobat, select the 'Help->Detect and Repair' menu item. Make sure that 'Adobe PDF Printer' is checked, click 'Continue' and let it do its thing. Once it's done, you'll have the 'Adobe PDF 7.0' printer listed in your 'Print & Fax' control panel.
Next, open the Terminal using an account with Admin privileges and type:
sudo chmod 4755 /usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf700
That should take care of it—at least, it did for me. YMMV.If you upgraded to VISTA X64, you also likely upgraded OFFICE also to OFFICE 2007. Both VISTA and OFFICE 2007 require AA8.1.2 I think (Vista had problems with earlier AA8 versions). Thus, AA7 is an issue that you are lucky if you get it to work in those environments. Actually it would be nice if MS would quit messing up their OS so that other software has to be upgraded. Adobe works at a rather low level of the system and getting all the bugs out when trying to follow MS specifications is apparently a real pain (think MS makes their specs kind of crazy on purpose - and folks often need to complain to MS rather than the software vendors). You might have heard that MS had to add their help system back in after the fact (they had purposely removed it from VISTA) since their own OFFICE products used the help system. Apparently a lot of companies also complained about Netmeeting that originally was dropped from VISTA and a new version was added that is VISTA compatible. Bill - Prior to updating to snow leopard, we were able to select FILE - PRINT and choose an Adobe PDF 9.0 virtual printer - the doc would be converted to pdf and show up on desktop.
Now that we've updated, we go thru the same sequence... everything looks normal (the PDF printer shows that it's working) - but we're not able to find the converted pdf file anywhere.
I realize we can just print and then save as a pdf - but need to regain the ability to print to a virtual printer due to some limitations in FusionApple made a change to the security model in Snow Leopard and Adobe was unable or unwilling to update the virtual printer. CUPS-PDF provides the same functionality but was able to make the necessary 3 minute coding change that Adobe couldn't.
Here are the details on the whole sordid story: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13348075#13348075
Message was edited by: etresoft to provide details - Hello people!
I'm having a weird issue when I print documents. Whatever I print, from whatever application I print, it seems that the top margin is reduced. For instance, I have PDF documents with a one-inch top margin. The margin appears to be okay on the on-screen, but does not appear when printed out.
I've tried playing with the options in the GNOME print dialog, to no avail. I also tried reinstalling my printer's driver, also to no avail. I have read something on the Internets saying it has to do with KDE print dialog, but I don't use KDE. I have kdebase installed, though.
Anyhow, let me know if you have any thoughts and/or need any info.
Thanks!in case it helps, these are the package versions I have installed:
[email protected]:~$ sudo pacman -Q | grep -i fooma
foomatic-db 4.0.6_20101215-1
foomatic-db-engine 4.0.6_20101215-1
foomatic-db-nonfree 4.0.6_20101215-1
foomatic-filters 4.0.6_20101215-1
[email protected]:~$
[email protected]:~$ sudo pacman -Q | grep -i cups
cups 1.4.6-2
cups-pdf 2.5.1-1
cups-pk-helper 0.1.2-1
lib32-libcups 1.5.0-1
libcups 1.5.0-1 - Ever since cups got a major upgrade I've had constant problems printing PDF-documents. I've searched and looked for solutions for more than a month. My guess was that I had messed something up by installing some kind of conflicting package that I couldn't track down. However since I made a fresh install the other day on a new SSD I could get a fresh start.
Printer: HL-Brother 5370DW
Cups and its dependencies: updated according to stable repositories with nothing added from AUR or modified packages
Issues before on older install:
- pdf printing, using common Linux tools, resultet in documents filled with thin grey lines
- Acroread would work but then it doesn't have the same dependencies
Issues on fresh install:
- pdf printing works... but screw up font size and page layout (font size is for whatever reason bigger, marginals smaller, and paragraphs that don't fit are seen as thin grey lines as described earlier)
- Acroread still works
Debugging of cups don't give much since there's no obvious errors. Related to the printer the following can be noted:
D [12/Jul/2012:12:45:05 +0200] [Job 9] Inserted workaround PostScript code for Brother printers
D [12/Jul/2012:12:45:05 +0200] [Job 9] Page = 595x842; 12,12 to 583,830
D [12/Jul/2012:12:45:05 +0200] [Job 9] slow_collate=0, slow_duplex=0, slow_order=0
D [12/Jul/2012:12:45:05 +0200] [Job 9] Before copy_comments - %!PS-Adobe-3.0
A haven't noticed any issues besides the PDF related ones. Maybe it's related to the same possible reason as some suggest, a conflict between poppler and cups filter. Debugging of cups gives this:
D [12/Jul/2012:12:45:05 +0200] PID 7342 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf) exited with no errors.
Does anyone know a solution for Brother printers like mine? Is there a solution in the pipeline that I could test?

Essentially, I'd like to create a print que on the server to capture print jobs and store them on the server rather than print them. Any ideas of how to accomplish this?Maybe you could try CUPS-PDF https://bitbucket.org/codepoet/cups-pdf-for-mac-os-x/wiki/Home
Install it on the server then share the printer and the PDF output folder?
